Zoom Presentation – April 4th 2023

We were treated to an inspiring and thought provoking talk by Susan Clark from Conwy Camera Club who shared her knowledge and experiences on the topic of “Composition – Rules and Myths”.

Sue had extensively researched the way in which composition contributes to the impact and visual appeal of an image with some of the so-called rules dating back to ancient times. The Fibonacci rule of numbers was discovered in the 12th century and shows up in nature, human anatomy, structural designs, the shape of spirals etc.  The Golden Ratio is also a mathematical concept that can be seen in landscapes like the Pyramids of Giza through to modern day designs of corporate logos.

Lots of compositional techniques ranging from use of colour, textures, shapes (especially triangles), leading lines, cropping, rule of thirds, flipping images and others were illustrated with myriad examples from the world of art, television, film and photography. The psychology of viewing an image and deriving emotion and aesthetic pleasure during the process can be strongly influenced by the subconscious effect of many of these techniques which permeate our daily lives.

It’s fair to say that we will all look through our camera viewfinder with a refreshed and more educated viewpoint.

Competition Evening #2 – November 29th 2022

Our second competition of the season included an Open section and a themed section of “Shadows”.  It was very competently judged by Peter Orr ARPS who gave detailed and constructive feedback on the images and also added background information, particularly for the wildlife images on show. Both sections attracted a healthy number of entries with widely differing interpretations of the subject matter. Prints were judged first and a digital projection of each print was used for the first time. This enabled the audience to have a better view of the print content but it was the physical mounted print that was being judged.

The winning print entries were as follows:

– Open Prints “Stag” by Nigel Walkley

Prints Open "Stag"

Prints Open “Stag”

– Shadows Prints “Shining example” by Nigel Walkley

After a short break, the projected images were judged and the winning entries were as follows:

– Open DPI “Rust in pieces” by Dave Bound

– Shadows DPI “Colourful shadows” by Peter Hodgson

This concludes our formal programme and the final activity of the year will be the Christmas Dinner on December 13th which will be held at The Angel Hotel. It only remains to wish our Club and Facebook members Best Wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Healthy New Year.

Presentation “My Portraiture Journey” – November 15th 2022

Terry Walters from Swindon Photographic Society gave an inspiring talk on his journey in portraiture photography with over 140 images of his work. Starting from Club photography sessions with models, he moved onto working with both amateur and professional models in a variety of locations including disused warehouses, ruined castles, reenactment events to beaches. His competitive nature and quest for different or unusual images takes him off the beaten track to find them and his work has gained wide recognition with just under 900 images accepted in international exhibitions gaining EFIAP, EPSA and BPE2 accreditation.

A variety of lighting set ups were covered ranging from natural light in both indoor and outdoor settings through to stroboscopic lighting to achieve the desired effects against challenging backgrounds. Guidelines and protocols for working with models were outlined along with the pros and cons of working with amateur v professional models and also being able to handle unexpected moments which were the subject of several anecdotes.

When Terry arranges a model shoot he takes along his “props box” which provides a never ending range of items to adorn the models and create the exact image that he is looking for.  Props ranged from clothing items, smoke grenades and imitation firearms to name but a few.

A selection of prints were displayed during the interval which members could examine up close and fully appreciate their quality.

DPIC Evening – November 1st 2022

The slideshow produced by the Western Counties Photographic Federation of the top entries into their 2022 annual digital projected images competition was viewed and featured entries from the top 10 clubs across the region and the overall winning entries. Over 100 images were viewed spanning many photographic genres and as expected the quality of images was impressive with many having been taken around the globe in some exotic locations.

The travel theme was continued after the interval when we viewed a recorded lecture by Sue O’Connell entitled “Travels in Mongolia”. This described the visits Sue and her husband made to the Altay mountains in the far west of the country, where they spent time with the eagle hunters and attended the annual Eagle Hunting Festival, followed by travelling to the Gobi desert in the south. Over the 45 minutes Sue gave a great insight into the main characteristics of Mongolian culture, their way of life, cuisine, customs and particularly the strong relationship and mutual dependence upon their livestock to survive the very harsh and unforgiving environment.

Summer Photowalk #1

Our first photowalk during the summer recess was at Lechlade-on-Thames and attracted a good level of participation. We congregated at The Riverside Inn and then wandered along the Thames path as far as St John’s lock before turning back. Several narrow boats were moored alongside the river, providing a colourful spectacle as well as some insight into life on the river and the creature comforts that could be included.

Whilst the weather remained dry, the overcast sky meant that the light was flat and the iconic shots of St Lawrence church spire with the river in the foreground would have benefited greatly from some direct lighting. Some swans “posed” to have their picture taken but retreated when no food was in store for them and near the end of the walk we encountered a large number of Canadian geese along with their goslings. A few military aircraft flew by, presumably en-route to Brize Norton, and included the Atlas replacement for the much loved Hercules transport aircraft.

After a lengthy walk we returned to our parked cars and took the opportunity for some refreshments in The Riverside Inn before departing.

The recently elected Mayor of Royal Wootton BassettCouncillor Pat Farrow was the guest of honour to present the awards to the winners of our Annual Competition for prints and projected images which spanned three categories; Action; Portrait and Open subject.  This is the first year that prints have been included since 2019 due to the pandemic and attracted a pleasing number of entries. The winning entrants were as follows:

After the formalities were over, members socialised with some refreshments and took the opportunity to chat with the Mayor who expressed a genuine interest in photography and enthusiastically explored members approaches to both seeing and successfully capturing images.

Annual Competition – June 7th 2022

Our Annual Competition was judged by Ralph Snook from Bristol PS and featured prints after a two year absence due to covid restrictions, as well as projected images. Entries were received in three subject categories namely Action, Portrait and Open with each member limited to three entries for each category.

Print entries were judged first and attracted a good input with the Open category being the most populated. Once again some creative interpretation was used in the Portrait section which was well handled by the judge.   After a short interval, the projected images were viewed and not surprisingly attracted a very healthy number of entries which added to the challenge for the judge. The evening concluded with selection of the best overall print which was “Shake those feathers ” by Nigel Walkley and the best overall projected image was “Splashdown” by Robert Slade with both winners featuring bird images.

Presentation of trophies for all the winning entries will take place at an Awards Ceremony on June 14th at the Angel Hotel by Councillor Pat Farrow, the Mayor of Royal Wootton Bassett.

Members Evening – May 24th 2022

Our Members Evening was well attended and included a number of contributions from the audience. Firstly Nigel Walkley shared some of his excellent bird in flight and insect images and explained the equipment used and the techniques employed to capture the images. A long focal length lens being a prerequisite for the bird images in combination with a lot of patience and prior knowledge of the subjects behavioural traits. This was followed by Dave Garmont who showed a host of images that charted his photographic journey and the cameras and lenses that helped him along the way. Lots of experimentation and practice helped develop the many skills required to capture his pleasing selection of ice hockey, dualling birds as well as motorcycle racing.

After the interval Peter Hodgson shared some images taken from a recent visit to Iceland and the evening was rounded off by Paddy Bohan who brought along some prints that were passed around for the audience to inspect. It was satisfying to see a good attendance, a couple of new faces at the Club and some lively conversations during the refreshment interval.

Members Evening – May 24th 2022

This is an open evening at which members have the opportunity to show some of their work and generally discuss photography issues. If time permits we can also critique some images that were submitted for external competitions but never made the cut. It is also the deadline for submissions for the Annual Competition for prints and projected images for which various trophies are awarded.

New members are warmly welcomed to come along and learn more about the Club and our activities. We meet in the Angel Hotel ballroom (1st floor), 47 High St, RWB at 7.30 pm with free car parking on the High Street and in Sainsburys car park behind the hotel.
