“Macro-photography” Presentation – October 2nd 2018

The Club witnessed an enjoyable and informative presentation by Michelle Whitmore on macro-photography. Macro-photography is extreme close-up photography, usually of very small subjects and living organisms like insects, in which the size of the subject in the photograph is greater than life size.

Michelle started by sharing some imaginative ideas on a range of cost-effective lighting equipment and creating backdrops using commonly available materials. She then detailed the various approaches that can be used to convert a standard camera lens to take macro images using extension tubes and/or inexpensive close up lens filters. The resulting images from various equipment combinations were then compared. In the second half, a wide range of images of everyday items were shown accompanied by an explanation of how the images were obtained. In fact many of the images had been taken by her grand-children which shows that macro-photography can be “child’s play” and the major limitation to what can be achieved is primarily our own imagination.

Summer Competition – September 18th 2018

The first competition of the new season included entries taken during the summer photo-shoots and the annual Club outing to Dunster/West Somerset railway. In the past Rob Slade has judged this competition but, as he was overseas on business, we were fortunate in being able to call upon Alan Armstrong from Cricklade Camera Club to do the honours.

The print entry level was disappointingly small and the winning print was “WSR Reflections” by Roger Woodward.

Just under 40 digital projected images were submitted which provided a more challenging task for the judge. The winning DPI was “Log at Faringdon Folly” submitted by Dave Garmont. Unfortunately Dave was not able to attend the meeting and receive the trophy for the best DPI but the print trophy was presented.

At the end of the evening there was some time available to view some of the images submitted to the 2018 WCPF Members exhibition.
