Summer Outing – July 7th 2019

This year’s annual Summer Outing was to the Black Country Living Museum at Dudley.  Armed with cameras, suntan lotion and a phrase book ” How to speak Black Country” the intrepid travellers reached their destination on time despite a delayed start. The first stop for many of the group was a tour of a mine, which graphically conveyed the miserable conditions and extreme dangers that men and children endured underground to extract the black stuff. Dudley had the thickest coal seam in the country which reached 10 metres in places.

With a multitude of rebuilt historic buildings to visit along with shops and plenty of refreshment opportunities, there was lots to interest the visitor and get the shutter finger working overtime.  In the afternoon, the group took a 45 minute canal boat trip into the network of abandoned limestone mines and tunnels. Sound and light shows along the way helped bring the environment to life and there was even a chance for a couple of people to have a go at “legging” the boat through a tunnel. Needless to say, they won’t be giving up their day jobs or seeking a new career.

After the canal tour there was time to visit any previously missed attractions and hop onto the trolley bus or old double decker bus back to the main entrance. Thev weather gods were once again kind to us and folks had an enjoyable and informative day.

Annual Competition – June 11th 2019

Judging of the Annual Competition for prints and projected images marks the end of the season of formal activities and Martin Cooper, from Gloucester Camera Club, was tasked with the duty.

Despite a heavy cold, Martin provided detailed and constructive feedback, firstly on the print images, followed by the larger collection of projected images. In both cases, the images were categorised into Action: Open and Portrait classes, with the latter class attracting a range of submissions beyond classical portraiture compositions.

The winning entries for each category will receive trophies at the first meeting of next season in September, as will the print and projected image that was considered to be the best across the three subjects. All those prints submitted will be displayed at an exhibition in the local library during the last two weeks of August, as has been the practice for many years.

The Chairman wished members a pleasant summer break and reminded attendees of the fortnightly summer photo-shoots that have been arranged and also the summer outing.

Calne Multi-Club DPI Battle – November 14th 2016

This multi-club battle featured 10 local photographic clubs who each submitted 9 images and ‘did battle’ at the Beversbrook Sports facility at Calne. Several of our members attended to support the Club and were treated to a very enjoyable evening and witnessed an outstanding array of ‘open’ images being projected.

With our rather disappointing past performances in club battles, there was some trepidation about how we would fare against such strong competition but this proved to be unfounded. At the half way stage RWBCC was lying in joint 6th place with Swindon PS and after a strong second half performance, we finished the evening in 5th place. The overall winners were Nonpareil Camera Club, with Calne in second place, closely followed by Frome and then Devizes. The trophy for the best image of the evening was awarded to Robin Gregory from Nonpareil.

So, the Club should be pleased and encouraged by our performance which proved that we are able to compete at a high level and outpoint some clubs that are bigger and more resourced than ours.

Interclub Battle

29 030_Lake Bled DawnOn Tuesday, we hosted Devizes camera club for a battle. 31 018_Street Photography_Nepalese WomenThe images were judged by Eddy Lane ARPS DPAGB. 38 018_Open_Apache & SmokeEddy had not seen the images before the night so it was started with a quick run through all the images, this gave Eddy the standard that he was going to judge, and with the scoring out of 20 it became apparent on first glance that the evening was going to be extremely good.34 039_Kiskadee

The evening was split into 2 halves with each club having 15 images displayed randomly per half. For a total of 60 images being shown, Eddy awarded 15 images the maximum 20 points. Devizes having 8 and RWB 7, and 20 images being awarded 19 points, 10 images each.60 008_Fast Corner

At the end of the first half refreshments were laid out while the points were tallied and confirmed and Devizes were in the lead by 4 points.

After the refreshments the battle commenced, where RWB were able to draw even during the 2nd half, but in the end Devizes won by just 6 points.

We would like to thank Eddy for his as usual fantastic judging and also gave some really useful advice.

The Club members who got 20 points were David Garmont – “Landing”, 02 008_Landing
Andrew Purdy – “Coming at me”,
Adam Kowlczyk – “Lake Bled Dawn”,
Robert Slade – “Nepalese Women”,22 047_Open_Coming at me

A big thank you to Devizes Camera Club for such a great evening, and congratulation for winning (if only just), the Club is so looking forward to next year where we all hope to put Eddy’s comments to good use. All in all a very enjoyable evening.

It was proposed and agreed at the A.G.M. that Club Subscriptions are to increase to £35.00.

What you got this year is

21 nights of photography related subject matter.

Christmas Meal 2014

Well that time of year came around quite quickly this year, it seemed that we had not had the last one and it was upon us again.

Like last year, the Club frequented the Royal George in Purton for our Christmas Dinner. The food was very plentiful if not too much, and very hot.

As usual the quiz done by Barry was very hard, well for me, especially the one about the British Prime Ministers, so a big thank you to Barry for organizing the quiz and the meal, I am sure that we all had a great time.

Club Summer Outing 2014

Sunday 20th July, was the date of this years summer outing. The trip this year was a nice leisurely coach trip to Corfe Castle, and then on to Swanage for a trip on the steam railway.

The day started bright and early with the coach, a nice 49 seater instead of the 36 seater that we booked. Having done the trip a few times, I was at first a bit taken aback when the coach driver turned right in Tidworth to go the Bulford – Amesbury way. But what a lovely route, I saw things that I have not seen before and will be going back on my own.

With a slight mishap from the driver, in that he missed the Coach parking in Corfe Castle, by the time he could turn back, we were only 2 1/2 miles from Swanage. However, it gave Geoff the opportunity to relive old times by directing traffic.

A great stopover in Corfe Castle for lunch was well timed, and again, I have never walked from the coach/car park to the castle entrance, a very nice route, and it brings you out at the tea rooms, very handy.

Then of to Swanage, for a quick walk along the sea front before being at the station for 3pm so that we were ready for our steam train ride.

Well were were all treated to seeing Tornado going up and down the track while we were in Corfe Castle, but when we were on the station platform, it arrived in time for some photo opportunities.

A bit later than usual, we all got on our steam train, and as were experiencing the days of bygone past with the steam train, and British Rail if it did not arrive late, not that we minded taking photographs of Tornado.

After the trip we had some time in Swanage, and some even managed to have a paddle in the sea, while others, it was a British tradition of Fish and Chips by the sea.

Back on the coach for the trip back to Royal Wootton Bassett.

So a huge thank to Geoff for organising the trip, as it was a huge success and every one is looking forward to next years trip.

Club Night – 29th April

T4 Camera’s came and gave the club a informal chat on new and upcoming technology in the photography world. After the discussion, it became quite clear that the next couple of years are going to be a very exciting time for the photographic world.
