Print Mounting Evening – May 3rd 2022

This additional meeting had been arranged specifically to share knowledge and experiences in printing images and their subsequent mounting in readiness for competition submissions. Firstly some potential print suppliers were explored to compare offerings and ease of online ordering. Prices ranged enormously between local print shops to the large online print houses which typically charge around 80p for an A4 print and £1.20 for A3 size.

We then turned our attention to methods of mounting prints for display purposes. Surface mounting the print to a backing board using a spray adhesive is one process that can be used which does require some dexterity in placing the print in exactly the correct position but using a repositional adhesive enables some adjustments to be made. The most popular route in camera clubs tends to be attaching the print to a window mat and securing it with tape. Additionally a backing board can also be used to provide additional rigidity and robustness. Window mats are cut from mat board materials and can be either bought ready made or made yourself using a mat cutter and a great deal of care. Paddy demonstrated how to cut a window mat, attach the print on one edge and then finish by adding a backing board. He also showed various images printed on different photographic papers to demonstrate the effects which can be achieved and also different coloured window mat and backing board materials.

Hopefully the information exchanged and the practical demonstrations will have given people more confidence in producing their own prints and either doing their own mounting or outsourcing. The deadline for print entries for the Annual Competition is May 24th with up to 3 prints allowed in each category of Action; Open and Portrait.

Audio-Visual Evening – April 26th 2022

Members were treated to a full evening of audio-visual presentations which had been entered into last year’s Western Counties Photographic Federation Competition. In total 38 AVs had been entered across 3 main categories: Short; Long and Photoharmony.  Short related to presentations that were less than 4 minutes in length; Long included presentations exceeding 4 minutes and a Photoharmony section enabled participants to demonstrate their skills in marrying images through appropriate transitions and strong harmonisation with the sound track. We started viewing some of the unplaced entries before moving to each category and watching the presentations in reverse order. Being able to see the judge’s comments gave further insight into the main characteristics of each presentation and how they were interpreted.

As always the subject matter was diverse ranging from social documentaries covering the covid lockdown experience to vibrant street photography, still life images, unusual connections and exploration of places both in the south west and far further afield. One can only marvel at the skill, patience and creativity that had been used to achieve the final results.

Members Evening – January 4th 2022

Our first meeting of the new year provided members with the opportunity to share some images and discuss photographic matters of interest. The topical theme of “Christmas” was chosen which lends itself to many different situations and interpretations. But firstly we viewed the 20 images that had been selected to represent the club in a forthcoming battle with Swindon Photographic Society and Highworth Camera Club in mid-January.

Then  Adam shared a portfolio of images taken at various locations including his lounge, Cirencester, Edinburgh Christmas market, RWB and Blenheim festive lights display. Many interpretations were evident from Christmas decorations, festively attired pets and street scenes to abstract images of lights viewed through a rainy bus window.

Peter then showed some images taken over the Christmas period during a visit to south west Cornwall featuring some land and sea scapes without a single piece of tinsel in sight.

We concluded the evening by looking at some Open images submitted to a RPS comperition a few years ago.

“Summer” Competition – September 7th 2021

Our first meeting of the new season was held at our new venue – the Ballroom at The Angel Hotel and was well attended. As part of our delayed 40th anniversary celebrations we held a competition that was open for the public to submit images with a “Summer” theme and the entries were judged by Eddy Lane. Despite public entries outnumbering Club entries, it was Club members who managed to scoop the top three places with the first place image being “Cooling off”.

Cooling Off

After the competition, Eddy Lane showed some of his intriguing images of Wiltshire wildlife taken during the lockdown and demonstrated just what can be achieved with careful planning, patience, a little bit of luck and lots of skill.

The President then made a short address before members enjoyed a slice of anniversary cake and some refreshments. Finally some images from years gone by were shown and the struggle to remember the names of people from the past began.

Despite being a year late due to the coronavirus pandemic, members felt satisfied that the occasion had been suitably celebrated.

Series and Themed Competitions – May 25th 2021

The evening started with a short introduction featuring examples of series of images that had a readily discernible connection between the images. We then viewed the set of images that had been submitted and which the membership had voted on prior to the Zoom meeting. Although the scores were closely grouped, the overall winning series of images was “Motorcycles” by Dave Garmont, taken during a visit to the Castle Combe race circuit.

“Food” was the set subject competition and a wide range of interpretations had been used. The overall winning image was “Summer Harvest” by Adam Kowalczyk.

The evening was rounded off by Jim Bullock who let us into the secret of his home studio location and explained how he had used a simple set up with card reflectors, a speedlight, a diffuser screen and cloth backdrop to achieve some very impressive images of glass containers, smarties in free fall and flying pasta, ably assisted by his well developed Photoshop skills. Hopefully our imaginations have been fired by the creativity that can be achieved with a basic home studio set up.

AGM – February 16th 2021

The Club held its first AGM using Zoom which worked well. After a welcome and introduction to the proceedings by the Chairman, reports by the Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer were presented and discussed. The main body of the meeting centred on the election of Club Officers and the incoming Committee had a familair and distinctly strong resemblance to the outgoing Committee with the exception of the addition of one additional member to the team. A couple of matters arising were discussed before the meeting was formally closed.

The AGM was then followed by a presentation on Underwater Photography.

AGM & Members Evening – February 18th 2020

The Annual General Meeting was held during the first part of the evening with the election of Club Officers resulting in a Committee that looks suspiciously like the last one!

Before the tea break, Dave Garmont shared his journey in becoming a light-weight photographer by switching to an Olympus E-M5 Mk3 camera and a range of four third micro lenses. These latest technology, faster lenses not only reduced the weight of his camera bag but obviated use of a tripod and were far more sympathetic to his arthritic neck. After demonstrating the equipment he showed an impressive collection of bird images that had been achieved with his new kit.

After the break, Jim Bullock treated us to a wide ranging presentation of his eclectic images, charting his photographic progression. His genuine love of photography and willingness to experiment and try new ideas to arrive at different results were evident. Using various computer programmes, Jim was able to demonstrate his creativity and originality in his images across several genres.

Competition #2 – December 3rd 2019

Our second Open Competition was judged by Steve Hallam who had journeyed to us from Bristol and was a member of the Hanham Camera Club.

Steve gave encouraging and detailed feedback on each print and projected image. His measured and pleasantly delivered comments contained a number of suggestions that could potentially enhance the quality and impact of the images viewed. He liked to be made to think by an image and his scoring and placements reflected this approach.

Our projector needs to be recalibrated as it displayed some images quite differently from how the judge had viewed them.

The winning print was “Tram Driver” by Roger Woodward and the winning projected image was “Bluebell Wood” by Chris Hayward.

Annual Prints Exhibition – August 17th to 31st 2019

In what has become a long established event, we will hold our annual exhibition of prints in the Royal Wootton Bassett library during the last two weeks of August . Over 30 prints will be on display showcasing the variety of images that Club members produce.

Admission is free and there is an opportunity to vote for your favourite print and also record any comments in the Visitors Book.

The exhibition will be open during library hours and members will be on hand to provide further information on the display and the activities of the Club during weekend opening.
